I bought the vehicle cheap at an auction. Everything is in peak condition, but one detail nags at me.The dashboard display showing what gear I’m in is off by one. When I’m on ‘N’ the car is actually in reverse, when I’m on ‘D’ it’s really neutral. ‘3′ is drive, etc… ANY information is appreciated, what causes this? Is it expensive to fix?(ballpark estimate) Will it become a problem if driven without remedy? I just want to know if it is a big deal or not.

There is a little gear to adjust that cable under the dash.
You have to pop the cover around the steering column to get to it.
Common Ford issue, not worth sweating over.
There is a sensor in the gearshift mechanism that lets the computer know what to display. The sensor may be dirty or misaligned. A couple hundred to diagnose is and the same to fix.
If it is not digital display, it is repairable through an adjustment in both the shifting linkage and the steering column.
I will not get into detail because you should have pay to have it adjusted, its requires experience
expect to pay $ 40-50-60 or 70 dollars
I would spend the money for maintenance of the vehicle instead
It’s no big deal to drive it like it is. The problem is a misaligned shifter cable and gear indicator. Usually there is a little clamp that has shifted on the cable. An auto repair shop can adjust the cable for you. If they are nice guys they will do it for free. If they are not ~$60 for shop time.
